Introduction of Chengdu
In Southwest China lies the vast expanse of the
Chengdu Plain. The plain boasts a pleasant weather, beautiful
natural scenery and flowers in four seasons. More than 2,500 years
ago, a king of the ancient Shu Kingdom established his capital in
the centre of the plain and named the capital Chengdu from "one year
for gathering, two years for county, and three years for capital".
Since 310 BC, Chengdu has been the political, economic and cultural
centre of the Sichuan Basin. It also gained the fame of "the Five
Metropolis'' and was equally famous with Yangzhou in the history.
Famous ancient politician Zhu ge Liang highly praised Chengdu as
"the Land of Abundance'' and great poet of Tang Dynasty Li Bai also
eulogized this "beautiful landscape."
In the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 25-220). brocade was advanced in
Chengdu and it got the name "city of brocade." During the Latter Shu
Kingdom (AD 933-965), Chengdu got the name "city of hibiscus" as
hibiscus was planted in the city walls.
A city with a long history and modern dynamic, Chengdu is the
capital of Sichuan Province and an important central city in
Southwest China. It has been designated by the State Council as
Southwest China's centre of science, technology, commerce, trade and
finance and hub of transportation and telecommunications.
With an area of 12,400 square kilometers, Chengdu has nine
districts, four cities and six counties under its jurisdiction. They
include Qingyang, Jinjiang, Jinniu, Wuhou, Chenghua, Qingbaijiang,
Longquanyi, Xindu and Wenjiang districts, Dujiangyan, Pengzhou,
Qionglai and Chongzhou cities and Dayi, Pujiang, Xinjin, Jintang,
Shuangliu and Pixian counties. Chengdu had a population of 10.597
million in 2004.
